The Institute was founded on March 13, 1947. The main aim was to establish a school for the deaf in the northern part of the country and subsequently the Transoranje School for the Deaf, was opened on August 16, 1954. Thereafter the Institute evolved and is currently the sponsoring body for 5 schools.
Over the past 64 years this service could be rendered due to donations received from the three Afrikaans churches as founder members, as well as from private donors.
The main aim of the Institute is to raise funds mainly to supplement the operating budget of the schools. The facilities, equipment and personnel needed for specialized education is expensive. This is aggravated by the general economic climate, shrinking state subsidies and decreasing donations. Essential projects are also funded to ensure that learners get the benefit of needs driven education. The Institute transfers 70% of its income for this purpose. During 2010 only 26% of the income was used for administrative purposes.
